Hard Water – Get Rid Of It Using One Simple Device

It can be very cost effective to soften hard water, as it does not readily form lather with soap. This causes the soap to be wasted when trying to form lather, and as a result a scum can form. Hard water may be easily treated to reduce the effects of scaling and to make it more usable for laundry and bathing.

The Process

A water softener works on the idea of cation or ion exchange in which ions of the hardness minerals are exchanged for sodium or potassium ions, consequently reducing the concentration of hardness minerals to tolerable levels.

One of the most economical ways to soften household water is with an ion exchange water softener. This unit uses table salt (sodium chloride) to recharge beads made up of the ion exchange resin that exchange hardness mineral ions for sodium ions. As the hard water passes in between and around the beads, the hardness mineral ions are absorbed, displacing the sodium ions. This process is called ion exchange.

When the bead or sodium zeolite has a low concentration of sodium ions left, it is no longer effective, and therefore is unable to soften water. However, if the resin is recharged by flushing (often back-flushing) with saltwater it can be re-used. The high excess concentration of sodium ions alter the equilibrium between the ions in solution and the ions held on the surface of the resin, resulting in replacement of the hardness mineral ions on the resin with sodium ions. After this the resulting saltwater and mineral ion solution must then rinsed away, and the resin is ready to start the process all over again. This cycle can be repeated over and over to re-charge the device.

In industry, the same softening process methods are used, but on a much larger scale. These methods create an large amount of salty water that is costly dispose of. Temporary hardness, caused by hydrogen carbonate (or bicarbonate) ions, can be removed by boiling. For example, calcium hydrogen carbonate, often present in temporary hard water, is boiled in a kettle to remove the hardness. In the process, a scale forms on the inside of the kettle in a process known as “furring of kettles”. This scale is composed of calcium carbonate.

Hardness can also be reduced with a lime-soda ash treatment. In 1841, a process was developed by Thomas Clark that involves the addition of slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) to a hard water supply which converts the hydrogen carbonate hardness to carbonate, which precipitates and can be removed by filtration:

The addition of sodium carbonate also softens hard water containing calcium sulphate, as the calcium ions form calcium carbonate which precipitates out and sodium sulphate is formed which is soluble. The calcium carbonate formed sinks to the bottom, and the sodium sulphate has no effect on the hardness of water.

As you can see there are some relatively simple ways to eradicate hard water from your water supply, as well as the hard water stains that it causes. The processes have been around for a long time in some cases, and are available to use to stop the negative effects that having hard water in your home can bring.

Below, we’ll explore the basics of a 360 degree feedback survey along with the benefits and drawbacks of implementing it.

Basics Of 360 Degree Feedback

Usually, the number of participants in a 360 feedback survey is limited. While having too few participants involved doesn’t provide a clear picture into the competencies of an employee, too many can yield confusing (and often, contradictory) data. A small group of a dozen or fewer participants is typically asked to fill out an online survey about their peer. The employee who will eventually receive this feedback is asked to rate himself using the same online survey. His responses are included with those of the “peer group.”

Once the survey responses are gathered, they’re tabulated and delivered to the target employee. Ideally, the feedback is used by the target employee to pursue further development in areas in which weaknesses have been identified.

Benefits Of Using 360

The 360 degree feedback system is useful for the recipient (the target employee) in identifying how his peers perceive his abilities. Often, an employee’s weaknesses aren’t obvious to that person. By noting the perception of others, such weaknesses can be identified. Once identified, they can be resolved with further training and development. This encourages a level of perpetual improvement.

Another benefit of this survey model is that employees are often uncomfortable delivering constructive feedback to their peers. The 360 system allows them to deliver useful feedback confidentially. This provides a valuable opportunity for peers to share their insight with others without having to worry about an emotional reaction.

Potential Drawbacks Of 360

One of the main problems with a 360 feedback survey is the anonymity with which the feedback is delivered (this anonymity is also a benefit, as described above). When the target employee receives the feedback from his peers, he may want to gain further understanding or clarification. In this case, that’s not possible given the confidentiality of a 360 system.

Another drawback to using the 360 survey is the possibility of office politics having an impact on the results. Peer responses may be geared to make the target employee look better or worse than is justified. Alternatively, a group of feedback recipients could conspire to make each person in the group look better by providing responses to the 360 survey that rate them highly. When either of these circumstances happen, the data is useless.

Creating A 360 Degree Feedback Survey

You should use questions on your 360 survey that blend both quantitative and qualitative data. While numeric responses are easy to analyze and can provide a quick glimpse into the strengths and weaknesses of the target employee, the qualitative questions can be valuable for isolating particular issues. Also, train those who are participating in the 360 feedback survey to provide responses that are clear, concise and unbiased.

While there are potential pitfalls to deploying a 360 degree feedback system, they can be valuable. If implemented properly, they’re an effective way for feedback recipients to recognize areas in which they could improve their skills, knowledge, or attitude. Consider using the 360 system to encourage an environment of consistent improvement amongst your employees.

Under a nervous rider, a galloping horse will go faster, generally, because it senses the lack of control.  The horse will get nervous itself, and will do what most frightened horses do – run away!

What You can do

Consider your abilities and genuine fears.  You want to ride a horse and be professional like a Pro.  You want to learn dressage riding – the set series of movements performed by dressage riders.  There is no need to struggle on your own, without help, as this could result in you or the horse getting injured.  Ride more suitable mounts under good instruction until you are more competent and confident.  Get good quality help and instruction from people who have years of experience and know.  Ride at a slow pace that you are happy with under instruction, from an understanding instructor.  Once you follow the instructions and are confident you can progress on to the faster gaits.

You need to understand, through a good teacher, exactly what you are doing to stop the horse. You may badly want to do something, but are afraid of doing it, such as jumping or cantering or having a gallop in a wide, open space.  You may be pulling back on the reins unconsciously, clinging and gripping – pulling back with your body? The epitome of fear could be the “foetal crouch”, which you may be unaware of doing.

Using On-Board Cameras For Track Days

Track days are becoming increasingly popular both for people wanting to experience high speed motoring in top of the range cars or simply for others wanting to push their own bikes and cars to the limit in a ‘safe’ environment. No extreme motoring experience would be complete without a DVD to demonstrate your Lewis Hamilton-like skills to family and friends. If this is a must-have for you it is worth checking out what is on offer at your track of choice before the day itself. Someone at the track may already be on hand to offer their services to provide you with a camera set up to film your experience. The second and popular option is to take your own helmet camera with you. Most of the regular tracks around the country are perfectly happy for people to use a helmet camera or on-board camera but they will check to ensure that the mounting of the camera is secure.

Thirdly, the higher profile tracks such as Silverstone or Brands Hatch will require you to sign a disclaimer promising that the footage is for private use only and won’t be uploaded to the web.  At these tracks you’ll also need to have the permission of the race officials to take the camera out and again they will want to check that it is mounted securely.

A handful of tracks are completely against having any in-car, on-board, or helmet mounted action cameras out on their tracks. Unfortunately this includes the legendary Nürburgring where they will give you a life time ban if they catch you trying to sneak a camera onto the track.

Choosing a camera

If you are going to be enjoying track days fairly often or if you would also use the camera out on the road or for various other sports, then it may be more cost effective to buy your own. A starter camera retails from just £99 and for £299 you’ll be able to get a top spec, HD action cam. The most popular cameras and the best for filming track days and other motorsports are on board cameras.

Mounting

There are various ways to mount an action camera to optimise results, dependent on both an individual’s preferences and the specific sport.  Within the field of motorsports, correct mounting of the camera is a vital consideration as track day officials won’t allow an action camera which isn’t mounted securely. Whilst industrial strength adhesive has been tested at huge speeds, that simply won’t cut it with officials. You’ll need to have a purpose built camera mount which either fits around or clamps onto your handle bar or forks. Panavise suction mounts are also acceptable on most tracks which is good news as the suction mount lets you position the action camera on to your helmet, the bikes tank, the outside or inside of your car or pretty much anywhere else where you can find a smooth surface.

Each track and race day official will have its own views on the best and safest way to use in-car, on-car, on-board, or helmet mounted action cameras to film your race day. You can rent them at the track or bring your own, in which case you need to be sure to have a secure mount so that you’ll be able to take it onto the track to capture your experience.
